A clean home feels good, but the strong sprays and harsh fumes of some cleaning products can be tough on older skin and sensitive lungs. The good news is that a few simple, natural ingredients can keep a home fresh and pleasant, often at a fraction of the cost.
Why go gentler?
Many conventional cleaners contain strong chemicals and perfumes. For most people they are fine, but they can irritate the skin, sting the eyes, or trouble anyone with breathing difficulties. Natural alternatives are kinder to the body and to the air we share.
The trusty cupboard heroes
You may already have everything you need.
- White vinegar. Cuts through grease and limescale and leaves glass sparkling. Diluted with water, it cleans most surfaces.
- Bicarbonate of soda. A gentle scourer for sinks and pots, and a natural way to lift odours from the fridge or bin.
- Lemon. Naturally fresh-smelling and good for cutting grease and brightening chopping boards.
- Castile or plain soap. A mild, all-purpose cleaner for floors and surfaces.
A spray bottle of half water and half white vinegar, with a little lemon, handles a surprising number of everyday jobs.
Keeping it safe and simple
Natural does not always mean harmless, so a few sensible habits help. Never mix vinegar with bleach, label any bottles clearly, and keep cleaning products out of reach if young grandchildren visit. Open a window while you clean for fresh air and a quicker dry.
If bending and scrubbing are difficult, long-handled tools and a sturdy chair to rest on can make the work easier and safer.
A fresher, calmer home
There is real satisfaction in a tidy, sweet-smelling room, and even more when it is done gently and affordably. You do not need a cupboard full of sprays to keep a home cared for; a few honest ingredients will do.
In our home, fresh, clean and comfortable surroundings are part of how we help everyone feel settled and at ease.
